Why must God be so mean?

Even though someone chooses not to believe in it, why should they spend eternity in hell? So by that logic, a criminal who spends his years killing, finally decides to convert, this covnersion guarrantees that he goes to hell, but a good charitable atheist will burn in hell because he isn't religious? Why? I have nothing against religion. I just love my freedom.
