Why is it that when doing Chem experiments...?

I've only ever had to do this with really small particles (powders for example) or liquids. Putting either on a scale without a container will ure that you will not get it all off the scale after it's weighed, which will throw off all of your calculations. I suppose larger particles would be put into a beaker just so they're easier to carry and not lose.
